FAQ’s

Minimum Age

Minimum age for sea kayak rental is 13 years old.  Please contact us to discuss options if you have children younger than this.

How do I know if I had enough experience to go sea kayaking with my friends?

Sea kayaking, like any water activity, has inherent risks. Kayak rental is available to people with outdoor experience, preferably in water activities. Every group must have an experienced person who is familiar with marine environments, and is able to anticipate and deal with adverse conditions, should they develop. On the morning of departure we will provide a full safety briefing which covers area such as weather, itinerary planning, on-water skills, capsize and re-entry. For inexperienced groups it’s a good idea to hire a guide for part, or all, of your trip – or join our One Day Trip for your first day, and use it as a training day before heading off independently.

Can I do this as a solo paddler?

Unfortunately not, we are unable to hire to solo paddlers.

Do I have to have any sea kayaking experience?

You don’t have to have sea kayaking experience to enjoy this trip, however some on water experience i.e. sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding does help as it gives you more confidence to understand the sea and weather conditions. If you are not feeling confident about your paddling experience that you may prefer to take a half day guided trip

What is included in the sea kayak rental?

Double sea kayaks and all safety equipment, safety briefing including weather and itinerary planning.

Do we have to go at the set times?

Our preferred departure times are 8.30am and 12.30pm, however if this does not fit your schedule, please inquire as we may be able to set another time for your half day rental. Maximum rental time is 4 hours including the safety briefing.

What do I need to wear/bring?

We recommend you wear: t.shirt, shorts, shoes that can get wet, bring a camera and sun protection and a snack, water bottle

What is the difference between the half day guided trip and the half day rental?

The half day guided trip itinerary is a one way trip i.e. we depart the Picton foreshore and finish further into the Grove Arm where you return to Picton by van.  The half day sea kayak rental requires you to depart from the Picton foreshore and return to the Picton foreshore, therefore you don’t get as far into Queen Charlotte Sound as you would on the guided tour.
